Thirteen.

The other day I was at the Winnipeg Law Courts on York Avenue to observe a court hearing for a conflict resolution class (Restorative Justice), and I came out of it with a lot more added to the "things on my mind" list.

I witnessed the final hearing of a young Winnipeg man who was charged with aggravated assault.  The short version of the story is that there was some sort of conflict going on between two different households on the same street in Winnipeg's inner city.  A woman living in one of these two households decided to move out.  On moving day her 44-year old brother came to help her.  At the end of the day he was smoking outside, and a young man from the other house came out and was walking his girlfriend home.  This older man then proceeded to cat call at the younger man's girlfriend from across the street.

After the younger man dropped his girlfriend off at home, he proceeded to walk back to the man and throw a punch at him, knocking him to the ground.  Long story short, the rest of the guys from that house piled out and beat this older man down to the ground.  The result - a man who was working and engaged is now confined to a wheelchair with sustainable brain damage and a lack of ability to speak.  A young man in jail who now has a son he's seen once that was born while he was in custody, who instigated the situation but had no intention of a gang beating leading to a man being in critical care.

Wow.
There are things people are experiencing every day that I cannot comprehend.
People need the grace and love of God so badly, but cannot find it.
There are so many different realities existing
-suburban life with little pain
-life without parental love
-life without acceptance
-life filled with violence
-life filled with joy
-lives of poverty
-lives of crime

What can I possibly do against so much hurt that I simply cannot comprehend?
I know I can do little, but God can do much.
Hope.

Twelve.

Kids say the darndest things.

For instance, the other day at the after school program I volunteer at, the following lovely things were said.

Little girl: Did you get a haircut?

Me: Why yes I did.

Little girl: I like your old one better.

Me: Um, thank you?

Little girl: No offense, but I don't even like this one. (Then proceeds to repeat that three times)

Me: I think I get your drift.

or this one...

Other little girl: Why do you have pimples all over your face?

Oh geeze. Thanks ladies.

Or like my brother who claims that from the side my face looks like a flat screen tv. Ahaha. Truly these are all very funny because they are kids. But in that case, I wish to take back my theory that kids just say what adults are to afraid to. Because I'd like to have some self-esteem left at the end of this week. Oh children.

Every now and then I find reason to miss certain awesome things from the past. It's usually from Outtatown, which even after 3 years I still talk about like I just left. Here's a picture because they're fun in posts, but also because right now I'm missing the ugliest dog you've ever seen, who captured my heart in guatemala and I affectionatley nicknamed... "Ratface" (no seriously, it was affectionate).

Eleven.

Today has been a bit of a downer.

School, bad dreams (something I frequent), a bit of confusion, friends, family.
It's all covered.

Ten.

Happy New Year!

First, I shall attempt to feel like I'm aiming for something by listing some New Year's resolutions here:

+ go to the gym and work out at home
+ always look to learn something
+ discipline myself in prayer
+ devote time to the friendships I value
+ be the best youth sponsor ever
+ grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control
+ go to cambodia!

Second, I shall show off this massive knee bruised that came to be on my knee New Years day when I went snowboarding at Holiday Mountain.  I feel some pride when I look at it.  I'm not sure why.  The pictures make it look a little faded.  Really, it looks awesome in real life guys.  And guess what?  It's sooo going to turn yellow.
